Can You See the Kid on the Bike?

August 2010

Dr. Mark Kimpel, an Indiana University research doctor and ophthalmologist, says he really doesn’t care for the photo you see here, as it doesn’t accurately show what night vision loss is really like. He describes night vision loss this way: “When you’re driving at night, you’ll still see the yellow stripe on the road. What you won’t see is the kid on the bike.”

July 2010

Millions of tanners are using hand towels meant to wipe sweat off their body to “protect” their faces during their sunbed session. Those using the towels think they’re protected from UV rays and preventing dreaded wrinkles. WRONG!

Brenda’s Excellent African Adventure

BRenda fishbaugh with lion africa

On my most recent trip to Africa, I didn’t mind sharing a tent with slugs, scorpions and ticks. I didn’t mind that the only heat available during the cold nights was a small hot water bottle to hug. I had no issues with nature’s “outdoor bathroom” when on safari. But there were a few things in Kenya I DID mind. I minded that people were illegally killing
endangered rhinos to sell their horns. And I minded that kids don’t get much food or education. Those are the things I really minded – and want to help change. Come along on my journey (Island Sun Times has kindly removed the bugs and bathroom issues for you!)…Brenda Fishbaugh   Read on….

This Industry Loves Dogs!

May 2010

The tanning industry continues to step up and rescue unfortunate animals from owners who did NOT deserve them.

In my April column, I featured the stories of three members of the tanning community who personally took in abused dogs. This month, I’d like to feature Heartland Tanning – a leading industry distributor and saviors of two abandoned Pit Bulls. I’d also like to give a huge shout-out to Keli Miller, owner of Solar Tans salon in Greenville, SC who masterminded a fundraising auction to benefit abused animals … and raised $30,000! Keli, you are an inspiration to us all!  Read on….

April 2010

I find folks in the tanning biz to have super big hearts! Chatting with a few pals in the industry, I was thrilled to realize many had rescued dogs from horrible situations. Here’s a heartwarming story from industry veteran, Joe Schuster, of 1st Resource:

“Petey (a mix of Pit Bull, German Shorthair and others) was born in the mountains of North Carolina and lived near my in-laws, chained to a tree outside of a house trailer. It was a brutal life for him with abusive owners. One summer, my father-in-law found him roadside after a vehicle had hit him, and took him to the local vet. After weeks of recovery, Petey was returned to his owners. The next summer, my father-in-law again found him after he had been shot. The vet removed a 9mm pistol slug from his shoulder and he spent many weeks recuperating with his new family – as he would not be returned to his ‘former owners’. Petey now lives with my family and our four other dogs, loves to be petted and scratched, and spends most of his time warming his body in the sun. He can do that with us for as long as he wants!” Read on….

November 2009

I’m always thrilled to hear of folks in our industry who are giving back. Like Jenny Bortman of Universal Insurance in Phoenix, AZ. Jenny Bortman loves her little pet pug, Ginger – no different from the rest of the pet owner population, right? Wrong! Jenny had all her friends vote her pug the cutest pug in the Arizona Pug Contest. In doing so, she raised $2,000 to help a no-kill animal shelter!

But Jenny doesn’t stop there – she is also running her first half-marathon to raise funds for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, and has already raised over $3,000 in donations! Read more…

EYE PRO “Freshens Up” 10k Runners

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

EYE PRO, Inc. — makers of WINK-EASE and VIEWkeepers and world leader in disposable eyewear, recently helped nearly 500 runners cool down with Fresh-Ease Refreshing Body Cloths for After Tanning during the fourth annual Alliance Rotary Castle 2-mile & 10K Fun Run in Alliance, Ohio over Labor Day weekend.

Over 455 runners participated in the 2-mile or 10K race, one of the premier races of the Subway Challenge Series. The race is held on the 20 1/2 acre grounds of Glamorgan Castle, a unique historic complex and now home to the Alliance City School District administrative offices. All money raised goes to Rotary charities to help local projects.

Tammy Mathia, owner of Sunbeam Tanning, was a registered runner of the Alliance Rotary Castle 10K race and a sponsor of the event.  “I use Fresh-Ease after using a tanning bed to cool down and remove tanning odor,” explained Mathia. “As a runner, I also love using the Fresh-Ease product  because it’s a very refreshing cloth to wipe my body off with when I’m finished with my runs,” she concluded.

Sunbeam Tanning Salon supported the race participants and all received free goodie bags which included EYE PRO’s Fresh-Ease Refreshing Body Cloths, as well as other donated products.  The gift bags were a big success and Mathia knew Fresh-Ease would be a perfect for all the runners.

“We are happy to support all the participants in the race,” said EYE PRO president, Brenda Fishbaugh. “We hope that Fresh-Ease Refreshing Body Cloths for After tanning helped cool runners after a race as well as after they tan!”
