If you’ve reading my columns regularly, you know that I’m a “clean freak.” I’m the person who travels with disinfectant wipes to sanitize my seat on the airplane and my hotel room (the TV remote and phones get the first swipes). So, when salon owners tell me that they have a CLEAN salon, I am skeptical. What does “clean” mean? Your version may not match mine…How clean is clean?

Eye Pro, Inc. and three other tanning industry companies recently helped endangered animals in Africa while helping many people there, too. Brenda Fishbaugh, Eye Pro President, is known as a lover of exotic and endangered animals. For years, she’s logged countless hours of her time – and plenty of her own money – helping various wildlife charities. This year, she and her husband Steve Fishbaugh, made their second trip to Kenya, Africa to help endangered rhinoceroses…and many Kenyans, as well. Salon owners often ask me to share information they can relay to their tanners about how damaging tanning without eye protection really is.  Instead of preaching, I thought I might share some thoughts of actual tanners that were posted on a message board. This is an actual thread where tanners discussed how unprotected tanning sessions damaged their eyes.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve noticed that all the salons around you are no longer providing “community” eye protection; they are selling a pair of goggles or disposables to every tanner who walks in the door.  You’d like to “make the switch” at your salon, but don’t know how. How did your competitors start charging for goggles and not upset their customers? How did they escape the nightmare of disgusting goggle soak-tanks and stolen goggles to make eyewear a profit center? And, most importantly, why did the switch to buying eye protection get more customers to wear it?

“For the past two decades, EYE PRO has been involved with helping endangered animals,” said Brenda Fishbaugh, EYE PRO President.  “After our visit to Kenya in 2010 where we learned more about how rhinos were being killed for the medicinal value of their horns, my husband, Steve, and I, became very concerned with protecting the rapidly dwindling rhino populations.”

EYE PRO has teamed up with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a renowned rhino sanctuary since 1995, dedicated and involved in helping the rhino in several ways. Lewa has guards and bloodhounds walking the grounds with guns to stop poachers. Lewa has also built schools and medical facilities to help the Kenyan Masaii warriors, so they don’t feel they have to kill a rhino to feed their children.  The native Africans have suffered greatly in recent years due to drought killing all the grass for their cattle and goats to graze.

While it is certainly true that the cold virus can spread from the hands to the mouth or nose, it can also spread from the hand to the eye.

Along with the tanning season comes the cold and flu season.
nothing is worse than your staff – or your tanners – being out sick when it’s time to get everyone tan! There are many things a tanning salon owner can do to reduce the number of colds and flu viruses that get passed around at the salon.
