If you’ve reading my columns regularly, you know that I’m a “clean freak.” I’m the person who travels with disinfectant wipes to sanitize my seat on the airplane and my hotel room (the TV remote and phones get the first swipes). So, when salon owners tell me that they have a CLEAN salon, I am skeptical. What does “clean” mean? Your version may not match mine…How clean is clean?

Salon owners often ask me to share information they can relay to their tanners about how damaging tanning without eye protection really is. Instead of preaching, I thought I might share some thoughts of actual tanners that were posted on a message board. This is an actual thread where tanners discussed how unprotected tanning sessions damaged their eyes.

Ed. Note: This column was originally printed in a 2004 issue of IST, and has been the most requested “Eye to Eye” column. Updated this month with new suggestions, we hope salon owners continue to find it helpful.
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve noticed that all the salons around you are no longer providing “community” eye protection; they are selling a pair of goggles or disposables to every tanner who walks in the door. You’d like to “make the switch” at your salon, but don’t know how. How did your competitors start charging for goggles and not upset their customers? How did they escape the nightmare of disgusting goggle soak-tanks and stolen goggles to make eyewear a profit center? And, most importantly, why did the switch to buying eye protection get more customers to wear it?

While it is certainly true that the cold virus can spread from the hands to the mouth or nose, it can also spread from the hand to the eye.

Right now is a great time to begin training your team. “Why so early?” you ask. The reason to start training in October is that there is so much information to take in, that if you spread various trainings out over a few months, your staff will better retain the information. Another reason is that many training sessions are available online.
We all know that sitting at a computer all day is tedious, so breaking the learning up into small, interesting segments makes it more fun. There are so many topics you can have your staff learn – how to properly sell and deliver an airbrush session, why eye protection is critical, how to sell tanning lotions, how to handle customer objections, all about your equipment, your salon procedures – and that’s in addition to learning about your extensive lotion lineup…click here to continue reading or to download a PDF of entire article.

“Do I really need to wear eye protection when I tan?” Indoor tanners have asked this question of salon operators since indoor tanning began. Unlike our skin, our eyes don’t have the ability to tan (and thus, develop no protection), so they can suffer many types of damage from UV exposure. Here’s a quick-reference guide to what can happen to unprotected eyes over-exposed to UV light…click here to view or download PDF of entire article.

Many indoor tanning salon operators aren’t aware that disposable eye protection created for our industry is FDA-compliant and allowed by every state (and even every country, worldwide). More disposable eyewear is used in salons than all goggle types, combined….click here to view or download PDF of entire article.
