Monday, July 2nd, 2018

“Although eye protection is not required by the FDA for sunless tanning, the FDA STRONGLY encourages customers cover their mucous membranes when being spray tanned by a held-held tech or in an auto-booth,” explained EYE PRO President Brenda Fishbaugh. “We teamed up with Sunwest, a Arizona supplier of many sunless products for the salons, and developed an eye protection called Sunless Clear disposable eye protection. The Sunless Clear disposable eye protection is available in 50-pair packs and 250-pair rolls,”  Fishbaugh continued.

Plan an Eyewear Awareness Month

Sunday, July 1st, 2018

I recently spoke to the amazing general manager of Branson Perfect Tan in Branson, MO about his promotional brainchild, “Eyewear Awareness Month.” Jeremy James explains, “every month, we plan to focus on some aspect of the business and create sales specials around sunless or lotions, high-pressure tans, or eye protection.”

The Eyewear Awareness Month has several facets. “Since the season is slowing, we want to focus on reminding our staff to ask to see every tanners’ eyewear every time they come in for a session,” James continues. “We’ll start with our staff taking the free 30-minute eye protection training and getting their personalized Eye Protection Expert certificates, and we have a one-minute quiz for them to take. The employee with the highest score gets bragging rights and an extra hour off work, or some lotion packettes.” They also want to ensure that every staff member uses eye protection when they tan. “If they don’t believe in it, they certainly aren’t going to convince our tanners,” says James.

Lamp Changes Require Eye Protection!

Friday, June 1st, 2018

Have you ever performed a sunlamp change in your salon without wearing eye protection? Former salon owner, Jason Corveleyn, did. In his own words: “I was trouble- shooting a high-pressure bed that had several lamps out. For about 40 seconds, my naked eyes were exposed to the light from the high-pressure bulb without the lens over it. It was the equivalent of getting flashed by a welding torch. I didn’t notice anything at the time but woke up at 2am with tears running down my face and incredible pain. I couldn’t see anything! My wife rushed me to the hospital, and luckily, it was a mild burn. I was given drops which reduced the pain. My corneas were burned – lesson learned. Bed maintenance techs need to know that just because you don’t feel damage happening, you can be burning your corneas!”

Bruce Hickman of Sun Tan Hut, in Rome, GA also shared his similar experience.

“We love helping salon owners educate their tanners through our educational counter mat, ” said Jackie DeWald, EYE PRO office manager. “With the month of May being UV Awareness Month, it’s a perfect time to remind everyone about the importance of using the proper UV blocking eyewear to protect eyes — whether tanning indoors or out.”

“Tanning salons need to be aware of and remember all of the ways they need to protect staff and clients’ vision. One of the most overlooked ways vision damage can happen is to change lamps without using proper eye protection,” reminded Brenda Fishbaugh, EYE PRO president. “Our UV Blockers maintenance glasses are under $10, lightweight and fit any tech’s face, and offer the necessary protection.” (more…)

Is Eyewear Necessary for RED-LIGHT? SALON OWNERS SHARE THEIR POLICIES

Tuesday, May 1st, 2018

The first time I had a red-light session, I was shocked by how bright the light was, and I found it very uncomfortable! For hours afterward, I saw green halos around objects – an indication that rods and cones (photoreceptors) in my eyes had been affected. Many red-light users tell me they also see green halos, which means it cannot be good for vision. For my second session, I wore the provided goggles. Afterward, the whole world looked neon blue, even with my eyes shut! I tried other colors of goggles and disposables, and they made the red light even brighter! Red light is a very narrowband wavelength, concentrated at about 688 nanometers. Traditional tanning eyewear that is FDA- compliant and Canadian health-compliant needs to block ultraviolet rays to 400nm. There are several types of eye protection made for red light, and these all block

the 610-750nm wavelength designated

as red light. To choose which red-light eyewear type to offer your customers, try several and find what blocks the most light. Red-light sessions tend to be profitable for salons, so I recommend you include red- light eye protection in your session price.

Currently, providing eyewear for red-light sessions is not required by law. However, the legislators won’t be paying your lawsuits if someone’s vision is dam- aged by your equipment. I highly recom- mend you err on the side of caution.

Let’s see what the policy is in some top salons:

Wear WINK-EASE Dark for Red Light and the “Ultimate Dark” Tanning Session!

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018

April 2018 – Eye Pro, Inc., world leader in disposable Eye Protection for indoor tanning and makers of Ultra Gold WINK-EASE, Lash Room WINKEASE and WINK-EASE Dark, wants tanners to try WINK-EASE Dark for napping, or those who “like it dark!”

“Tanners love our original Ultra Gold WINK-EASE disposable eye protection; however, when they want to catch a true power nap during their sunbed session, the eye protection of choice is WINKEASE Dark,” says Brenda Fishbaugh, President. “WINK-EASE Dark disposables still provide FDA-compliant eye protection, but the material is considerably darker than our Ultra Gold WINK-EASE, which helps tanners nap more easily and avoid light-sensitive headaches,” Fishbaugh continued. “And because of its custom fit, WINK-EASE Dark leaves maximum eye area exposed, so tanners receive the full benefits of red-light exposure, while still protecting the eye from the VERY strong red-light emitted. Even though eye protection is not required by law for red-light sessions, it is very smart to protect your eyes from the intense light.”

THE FLASHLIGHT DEMO

Sunday, April 1st, 2018

Do you and your team struggle with ways to get your salon guests to wear eye protection for every tanning session? Chicago salon owner, Bruce “Sparky” Wood, came up with a unique solution that he’s used for years. When faced with a tanner who says, “I don’t wear eye protection,” Bruce picks up a small flashlight he keeps at the front counter and begins his demonstration “See this?” he asks the guest. “It’s a small flashlight. Close your eyes. Can you see the light from the flashlight through your lids?” The salon guest will squint; the light from a tiny flashlight held a few feet from the eyes is amazingly bright!

How NOT to Ask to See Your Tanner’s Eyewear

Saturday, March 10th, 2018

Salon owners often inquire how to ask to see client’s eyewear without angering clients. Let’s look at what NOT to do. I was in a salon recently, and the counter person says to the young woman ahead of me, “Do you have your eyewear?” The woman answers, “Yes”. And the attendant continues, “May I see it?” The woman digs in her purse, then goes out to her car and digs around in her car for a while, and comes in red-faced. The customer is, of course, embarrassed and frustrated–two things we’d like to avoid with our valued customers!

I suggest you ask, “May I see your eyewear, please?” EXACTLY like that, EVERY time. It is polite, as it contains two “asks”, with “May I..” and “please”. And the only thing the customer can do is show you their eyewear. If they don’t have it, sell them a disposable pair, or give them a free disposable pair if they are going into any of your upgrade beds. You’ll make more on the upgrade than the few cents you’ll lose on the disposable eyewear. (more…)
